Fastest Person on a Bicycle
Denise Mueller-Korenek’s name is etched into the annals of cycling history as the woman who shattered the world speed record on a bicycle. On September 16, 2018, at Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats, she achieved an astonishing feat: riding her custom bicycle at a jaw-dropping speed of 183.932 mph (296.009 km/h), making her the fastest cyclist ever recorded. Her record-breaking ride not only defied expectations but also demonstrated the extraordinary power of human determination, engineering prowess, and sheer bravery.
Aiming for the Impossible
The idea of riding a bicycle at nearly 200 mph might seem unimaginable to most, but for Denise Mueller-Korenek, it was the culmination of years of preparation and an insatiable desire to push the boundaries of what’s possible. A lifelong athlete, Mueller-Korenek had been a competitive cyclist since her teenage years, earning multiple national titles. However, she took a hiatus from racing to focus on family and business before returning to the sport with one audacious goal in mind: to break the world speed record on a bicycle.
The previous record had been set in 1995 by Dutch cyclist Fred Rompelberg, who reached 167 mph. But Mueller-Korenek, with a team led by pace driver and motor racing legend Shea Holbrook, was determined to go faster than anyone ever had—man or woman. Her quest required not only immense physical fitness but also cutting-edge technology and a highly specialized support system.
